Functional Orthodontics (Adults & Adolescents)
From 11 to 99 years old.
Examples of functional orthodontic treatments completed without surgery and without premolar extractions. Correction of all classes of dental misalignments and occlusal dysfunctions.
Severe skeletal and dental Class III
Teeth abrasions, discomfort around the frontal teeth area, aesthetic complaints. Over the course of the last 5 years, the patient had been systematically advised by specialists to undergo an orthognathic surgery.
Skeletal and dental Class III, bilateral posterior and anterior crossbite, mandible deviation to the right, multiple enamel abfractions and gum recessions due to occlusal trauma.
Functional diagnostic, functional orthodontics with fixed appliances (multi-loop edgewise archwire [MEAW] and brackets), occlusal restorations. Full treatment completed in 18 months.

Before and after functional orthodontic treatment, without orthognathic surgery

Before and after functional orthodontic treatment, without orthognathic surgery

Before and after, no lip asymmetry, better head and neck posture
Harmonisation of the occlusal scheme, unloading of the TMJs, better aesthetics - wider upper dental arch, no “black corridors”, brighter smile, better phonetics, enhanced profile.
Skeletal and dental Class II
Muscle tension, cervical pain, frequent headaches, compromised aesthetics.
Skeletal and dental Class II, crowding and headaches attributed to a retruded mandible and TMJs compression.
Functional diagnostic, functional orthodontics with fixed appliances (multi-loop edgewise arch wires [MEAW] and brackets), occlusal restorations. Full treatment completed in 16 months.

Before and after functional orthodontic treatment, without premolar extraction

Before and after functional orthodontic treatment, without premolar extraction
Mandible lateral displacement (MLD) & crossbite
Severe neck and shoulder pain and stiffness on the left side, discomfort from teeth abrasions and fractures.
Mandible lateral displacement to the left, anterior crossbite, traumatic occlusion with multiple abrasions and teeth fractures, missing molar, interdental spaces, due to the decreased vertical dimension of the bite, and reduced space for the tongue. Severe TMJ compression on the left. Functional restriction of the second cervical vertebrae (C2).
Functional diagnostic, functional orthodontics with fixed appliance (multi-loop edgewise archwires [MEAW] and brackets), occlusal restorations. Full treatment completed in 14 months.

Before

Functional treatment with hand-made multi-loop edgewise archwires (MEAWs)

After the treatment, centered and stabilised lower jaw, no symptoms in the neck

Crossbite with crowding
Speech and phonetic difficulties, uncomfortable chewing with digestive problems, closed and introverted personality.
Unilateral posterior and anterior crossbite, lateral openbite.
Functional diagnostic, functional orthodontics with fixed appliance (multi-loop edgewise archwires [MEAW] and brackets). Full treatment completed in 20 months.

Before and after

Before and after
The upper jaw physiologically overlaps the lower one, allowing for a clear speech and phonetics. The lower jaw is centered with an unloading of the TMJs and a better mastication thanks to a harmonised occlusion. Improved aesthetics, positive changes in character with a greater self-confidence and communicative abilities.

Positive character changes with a greater self-confidence. Evened smile, re-balanced facial and cranial symmetry
